The picturesque village of Conchar is situated in the fertile valley of Lecrin in Andalucia and is surrounded by orange and lemon groves with almond orchards on the higher slopes. Casa de la Cueva is one of the highest houses in the village and has stunning views across the rooftops towards the mountains.
There are bars in the village which serve tapas. Though there is no village shop, there is a bakery and vans call several times each day to sell vegetables, fish etc. The nearby town of Durcal provides all the facilities you might need.
This is a beautiful area for walking and within two minutes you can be in the open country above the house. The hillside is covered with herbs - rosemary, lavender and thyme - plus lots we dont yet recognise. The agricultural life of the village seems to have changed little in the last decades, with mules and goats to be seen everywhere. The cats of the village are always to be seen sunning themselves and unlike the cats in some villages, these seem to be loved and well cared for. A church, with bells ringing the hours and half hours, sits in a pleasant square at the heart of the village.
Casa de la Cueva is a village house built into the hillside, with kitchen, dining room, toilet, shower room and one twin-bedded room downstairs and sitting room and main bedroom (with double bed) upstairs. The front door opens directly onto Calle Cuevas which has only pedestrian or mule access. This is a traditional stone floored house with simply furnished accomodation, wood-burning stove and all electric facilities (water heater, washing machine, fridge/freezer and cooker). The downstairs rooms at the back of the house are in fact caves cut out of the rocky hillside and are beautifully cool in summer - hence the name (cueva=cave).
Due to its location it is not possible to get a car to the front door and a short up-hill walk with your luggage will be necessary. Therefore we dont think this house will suit those with very young children or the very elderly, but the view across the valley to the Sierra Nevada, which are snow-capped for most of the year, is superb and worth the small effort!
Conchar is only a short drive from the autovia which links Granada to the coast at Motril (both only 30 minutes drive away) and just two hours drive from the airport at Malaga.

Conchar is not for you if you hanker after the golf courses and nightlife of Marbella, but if what you are looking for is the real Spain, rural, agricultural and friendly you will love it here. The Alhambra at Granada is easy to reach (30 minutes by car). There is even skiing at Spain's major ski resort on the north side of the Sierra Nevada only 55 minutes away, and the beautiful villages and valleys of the Alpujarras are just 30 minutes drive to the east. This is where you will want to buy your Serrano ham and local honey - and the best bottled water in Spain!
